Sunday Morning Adventure -- Round Trip

Once in a while I feel like I could walk again.  Today was such a day.

I woke up feeling like I should try walking.  I got my walker from its storage place and placed it in front of my wheel chair.  I rose and walked.  Slowly, very slowly, and putting all my weight on my walker, I walked across the room.  I turned and started back.

"I'm walking...and as well as some residents here at the old folks home. Maybe I could manage more."

But by the time I reached the wheel chair again, I was thoroughly exhausted and ready to sit down. But I made it.  A round trip of twenty feet.

 Maybe more next Sunday..

Thats great Chuck. Maybe do a little daily to get some more strength in your legs and body. Ten steps a day until you get built up more.

Way to go! Now, a question. Are there no physical therapy facilities in that joint? Yes, I realize you are living on the assisted living side of things, but are there rehab facilities in another wing or building on the campus?

If there are, see about scheduling some regular time with a PT to work on strength training and balance in your back, abdomen and stump(s). If not, surely there is a facility within reach of a ride on the nasty facility bus. Get your PCP to refer you for maintenance PT.

If that's not possible, at least snag a PCA to be present in your room when you are doing these walkabouts. It makes it so much easier to fill out the paperwork for the ambulance crew and may prevent your death (from lying for hours on the floor out of view of the casual check the PCA's do periodically).

Keep on truckin' but do it with safety in mind.

Congratulations! Hopefully next Sunday you'll go further. A little at a time. Good luck.

Hooray for you!  Feels great doesn't it?  We have a lady here about your age or older who hadn't walked since her fall 2 or 3 years ago when she broke her leg and hip.  She's now walking short distances with a walker.  She's was grinning from ear to ear the first time she did it!  Annie

You have encouraged me to try harder. Presently, I am dealing with myositis which has affected many things in my life, including walking. I enjoy your blog, and your Spirit greatly.
