ALL YOU WONDERFUL J-LAND FRIENDS

CHUCK HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!

Dear Ones,

He's left the planet, actually, I assume. Your comments and prayers, your thoughts really worked, Chuck released his body knowing he was truly loved at 10pm PDT July 1st. He told us weeks ago he wouldn't be around for the 4th, he was correct.

Your comments are a huge blessing to all of his family, and we thank you soooooo much! Wish I could be more creative, more like Dad in how I express this to you...but I know he would say it something like this:

THE CURMUDGEON HAS CHECKED OUT!

Our love and thanks for a great ride for our Dad, Grandfather, Cousin, Uncle and old friend! You are ALL AWESOME! I probably cannot respond to each and every one of you, so please know our heartfelt thanks and hugs across the web! XXXXOOOO

Blessings, Kate and family

I am being very selfish right now, for I am sitting here crying for the friend that I have lost...when I should be rejoicing for the time that I was honored to have known him...and when I should be happy for our world to have had such a good man....but I can not help my feelings of loss...
I do pray that the good Lord will comfort and shine HIS light among you and the entire family of loved ones that Chuck leaves behind...and also his home buddies.
God bless you and keep you and thank you so much for letting us know.
love,

Dear Kate and family,

Chuck spoke of you all often, with love and laughter. You are all the reason he needed to last as long as he did. thank you for sharing him with us. I hope that old curmudgeon is flying over head laughing and soaring now that he is no longer in pain. You all have a lot to live up to, we all do. His grace, dignity and sillyness is ledgedary. My best to you all. Peace

Dear Kate and Family,

So sorry to hear about your Dad, Grandfather, cousin, Uncle. He had a soft and generous soul and his writings enveloped us all. I'm so sad the world had to lose someone who could talk, teach, & touch strangers hearts the way he did.

hugs, Bethe

Dear Kate and Family,
Please accept my humble and heartfelt condolences for the loss of your dear Father/Grandfather/Great Grandfather, etc. Chuck lived an amazing life, and was graced with the presence of his sharp-as-a-tack mental faculties right to the end. I have been reading his words here on AOL for four years, and feel a richer man for having done so. His words - nay, his presence - here in J-Land will be sorely missed by all.
 With warmest regards,

Paul Little

Dear Kate and Family,

We have one less star shining here in J-land, but I sure hope he is looking down on us, throwing some of his humor here and there. I know I'll miss him so much!

At least his pain and suffering is over now. I know how independent he was and how miserable he must have been with the pain and being unable to do the things he wanted to do.

Good-bye Chuck.... it's been a great read!

Love,
Jackie

It was such an incredible pleasure to meet Chuck. Before I had the pleasure of meeting him at his place of residency, I'd been a reader of his blogs and a fan of his little art pieces. They always make me laugh or cheer me up. In fact, right now I have one of his spoon-people convention deals set as the background on my desktop.

Chuck said something to me while I was there visiting him with Marshall... he said that "Friendship is the best medicine, and I feel like I've made a new friend today." I started thinking of that a couple days ago and just began to weep. It is such a true statement and it meant a lot to me to have made his acquaintance in this way. To be able for a moment, to help take his mind off of the pain. I was happy to be there to listen and talk with him. He was a very special being and I know this will be a great loss for his family and all of those in the "old folks home" as he called it. He had a sense of humor and a positivity towards life that is difficult to find in people.

While I was there, I noticed he had a collection of audio from Jack Kerouac. I am a big fan of the beat movement and had hoped to listen to some of it with him. Today in Chuck's honor, I will.

Great prayers and blessings to Jo, Kate and all the rest of your family. Please let me know if I can be of any help in any way.

I'm sorry for you and your family's loss, Kate. I believe Chuck is in Heaven making everybody laugh. He won't need that wheelchair anymore to make them laugh. He will be running through mud doing feet art instead of wheelchair art. I'm sorry I am not being more somber at your time of grief, it is just that Chuck inspired me so much not to be somber. With him I had joy. I am practicing his legacy. May you be comforted some how in the days ahead, Kate.

Yeah, he probably would have said something akin to that:) Part of him will remain in all of you. In reading back, an entry a month previous had him trying to say no to participating in July 4th events this year. He did know, and that's okay. He left, not abandoned, but loved and I think feeling special. God be with you all at this time. Even if it's a blessing for him not to linger in pain, I know that it's still hard. Watch those fireworks on his behalf, his own star perhaps looking down from above and wishing you all to stay enjoying life. (Okay, I'll add my tears to this now daggnabbit I'm at WORK oh well.) -- Robin

Chuck and I made a little video a couple of months ago. He played the music on his keyboard.

It's posted on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjgIcFPsiq8&feature=related

There's a much more professional video also on YouTube, created by the local newspaper:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CYIrNdhJeY&feature=related

Chuck is one of my unforgettable characters. We interacted quite a bit during my year-long travels around North America; but we also shared several cups of coffee at his "old folk's home" and Starbucks. He even attended a writer's class as my guest once at the senior center -- in better days.

Wherever Chuck is (even if only in our memories), there is music and laughter and lots to think about. He was a great man, a great friend.

I've been away from the Internet for all but the most basic tasks for months now. It saddens me on many levels to learn Chuck has left the party. None of us will live forever, but he was one I hoped would be around a while longer to annoy me out of complacency. Months ago he confided in me concerning his health and while his death isn't a surprise, it wasn't wished for, either. I'm sure his pain levels and confusion became an issue for him, as it would for me. His strength in the face of a sure thing was a lesson to me (and, I hope, to all his readers and family and friends).

I will miss him as I am sure you will, too. He was a real mensch.

I am heart broken to hear this new's. I just saw this entry tonight. With summer and a terminal illness in the immediate family, I have not been on-line much. Your Dad was somewhat new to me, I started reading his journal this past winter. I so looked forward to his journal alert's. he had such a great sence of humor and a wisdom only a man of his age and experiences could back up. He was such a delight. My thought's and prayer's go out to you, your family and friends. I know this is a great loss for your family. You gave him a great gift. The gift to let go with dignity and know that he had been LOVED. God be with youtoday and alway's.

Hi, Chuck.

What's it like in Heaven?

I just wanted to come over to your blog and say hello, as I was thinking about you just now. Val says that three months have passed... Was it three months today?

I just want to say I am glad you're blog made it over (that it didn't go into oblivion when AOL Journals shut down forever in Oct 2008), and it is here safe with the rest of us in the jlandtoblogger community. You are still right here where you belong, and I intend to come back from time to time to read your words...

We sure have had a lot of change in jland the last few months... But we will be able to adjust with help from the Lord. It's just that everything happened so quickly. Anyway, Grandfather Groundhog, it's time for us to move onward and upward, to many new and good things.

I am just glad somebody saw fit to migrate your blog here to Blogger, and bring you along with us. It just wouldn't be Jland without you!

So while you are up there in Heaven, keep an eye on us down here in Jland if you can, and help us to all get along, LOL.

I'll be back to talk to you soon --I just wanted you to know I found comfort in you being here is all... I'll be back my friend, when I need to read some more of the signs on your door... Or take a peak at your wheelchair art...

Okay, take care, G Groundhog. I love you, Krissy :)
