How soon we forget

There is a cranky old lady lives in this old folks home with me.  She hogs the laundry room, she moves my clothes out of the dryer before they are finished. She seems always to be there when I go to do my washing.

She grumbles about everything, the service, the house keeping and especially the food.  She can't eat this or that, and she thinks there is a conspiracy against her because cinnamon rolls are made with cinnamon and she can't eat cinnamon.

In this same home with me is a hero from WWII.  She was a Wave, a woman serving in the navy, assigned to special unit in or near Washington D.C.  It was a secret outfit, and the Waves were isolated from other units. They billeted in special areas and, in those precomputer days, listened and transcribed thousands of Japanese radio transmissions.  Their assignment lasted for months, and they were told it was 'death' if their mission leaked out.

At last the team, listening, transcribing, and analysing, broke the Japanese Navy Code, and because the Japanese did not know it, the U.S. Navy had information that saved thousands of American lives.  At the end of the war a high official gathered them and told them what they had done and they received a special citation.

And in case you haven't guessed, this war hero, and this cranky old lady, are the same person.

just because she is a war hero does not give her the right to be cranky and rude

Oh my gosh.... I didn't think for a minute that is where you were going with the story..... wonder what makes her so cranky now? Surly someone has told her what a wonderful thing she did. maybe it did something to her to work under that pressure.  Poor old lady... does she have a family? maybe that is it..... I hope I don't get like that. Thanks for telling us. Sandra

Oh I thought this was going to be a comparison of two ladies. Don't you hate to be around people who are so negative? Maybe she has a reason though so I won't judge. Paula

gotta feel a bit sorry for her; imagine all the excitement she had in the war and now what does she have for excitement

Perhaps she is cranky because she is bored and has to much time on her hands... ?  Just a thought...

Love to read all your entries Charles because they are so interesting.  I'm thinking there are people like this in every home, because we have a couple who are just like her.  Both are old war nurses, but both are nasty tempered and will hit, bite and verbally abuse almost all the aids.  One has the appearance of an old bag lady from 6th street, but her family actually has money.  She hates water and it takes 3 people to get her to take a shower.  Strange.

Last weekend was a rough one here.  In the past week and 1/2 we've lost 3 residents.  The last one was a sweet old (92) Jewish dentist from Brooklyn.  He loved the ladies and loved to sing.  He'd done some entertaining in the old vaudeville days.
