Spooks -- One Evening Early

We had an earthquake last night.

I felt the earthquake but thought it was a spook.  I was typing at the moment and someone "bumped" my wheelchair.  I thought someone had come into the room without my noticing and bumped my wheel chair.  I was startled and looked behind me, and then I was really startled: no one was there.

The thought of an earthquake crossed my mind, but I dismissed it because it was only one quick jostle. The thought of a spook crossed my mind, but I dismissed that because I don't believe in them either...and Halloween was still a night away.
I said out loud, "What the Hell was that?"  I shrugged and went on with my typing.  I didn't think about it again until I heard on the news that we had had an earthquake.

Beware of things that go "bump" in the night...especially on the eve of Halloween and Halloween night !!!  Glad things are ok there !

Ray & I were watching t.v. when it hit.  Like you, we felt that short jolt.  Unlike you, we had no doubt what it was.  We each stood in a doorway for about a minute until we were reasonably sure it was over.

I lived in San Francisco too long not to recognize an earthquake.  Still we were glad to see the t.v. report.

Wow!  To me a "bump" + Calif = earthquake.  Never felt one while I visited Calif. but my memories of the Good Friday Quake in Alaska (1964) would have made me take notice.  Glad you're ok.

I'm wondering if this is your first one. I have never experienced one and hope I never do. Paula

I think I'd rather deal with the spook. In 50 years, I've been through 2 real earthquakes. Neither was more than a good shake, but it was enough to remind me that when it happens in Chicago, it's usually and explosion. (Neither was, and both happened here.)

I've long advocated that you get wider tires for that wheelchair of yours, and I'll use this earthquake to remind you again.
