Throw Away Society

Is it GOOD or BAD to live in a "throw away society"?

In moving from a two room apartment to a one room apartment, I find I have lots of serviceable clothes and household goods and furniture to give away.  LOTS...   FREE...

However, I have no way to transport these goods.  I am trying to give them away... here... and now.  Alas.

There are no longer agencies who need our surplus goods enough to come get 'em.  Remember the good old days. Call the Goodwill or the Salvation Army, and they would send a truck with willing workers to accept your donations, AND load them in a truck and take them away.  Sorry, no longer...not in my town anyway.

If I put the stuff in the trash bin, someone will find 'em.  But they rummage around, tossing my valuable stuff hither and yon, leaving a mess, and breaking my heart to see my treasures scattered about.

Oh, for the good old days when we had poor people around.

(Yes, my tongue is in my cheek, but it really is a strange society we live in with more goods than we can cope with.)

Chuck, do you have a consignment store in your area who will pick up all items?  That's how I got rid of all the flotsum left in my house.  Around here, everytime I go through my closet I let the housekeepers go through what I'm getting rid of.  Sometimes they'll haul off the remains.  Just suggestions.  Annie

In our town they send out a notice when they will be on our street so that we may put stuff at the curb or on the porch for them. Paula

You might check the phone book. The last couple of places we lived, goodwill or salvation army wouldn't pick up, but there were smaller charities who would. Good luck...Sheila
P.S. or maybe a church...

I remember back a few years when my Mom broke up housekeeping. I was in charge of finding places for her furniture. With that in mind, I called around only to find out that I was also in charge of renting a truck and drafting workers in order to get it all to the charity that had room for her stuff. Sad.

Have you heard of FreeCycle?  I know there's a branch here because I'm part of it.

I can send you the link if you're interested.
