My View on the Immigration Issue

Today I am posting on the 4th of July bulletin board these lines I copied from Emma Lazarus' poem The New Colossus.

Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I'm sure many Americans really meant those words when they were placed on the Statue of Liberty.  I'm not at all sure they mean them any more

There was a Mad Magazine it many years ago that turned it into a song, and continued,

"And I'll send them right back
Yes, I'll send them right back
To you-oo!"

That was a bad attitude for people to take 40 years agom when Mad satirized it.  It's just as bad now.  Living in the Arizona desert, I can never forget how many people die within a hundred miles of my house, of heat, dehydration, musadvntuary and man's unhumanity, just trying to get here so they can earn a living.
